Why Should You Know Your Hourly Rate?

Knowing your hourly rate lets you evaluate every expense as "how many hours did I work for this?" This awareness is one of the most effective ways to reduce unnecessary spending.

Evaluation Tips

  • Ask "how many hours of work is this?" for every purchase.
  • Your real hourly rate is lower when you factor in commute and prep time.
  • Increase your hourly rate by developing skills and improving productivity.
  • Calculate overtime rate separately — it usually differs from regular rate.

Info

Divide your monthly net salary by total monthly work hours. Example: 30,000 TL / (8 hours x 22 days) = 30,000 / 176 = 170.45 TL/hour.

For your real hourly rate, factor in commute time, preparation time, and all time spent for work. This is typically 20-40% lower than the nominal hourly rate.

It depends on your industry and experience. In Turkey, 2024 minimum wage is about 100 TL/hour. Average earners are 150-300 TL/hour, managers and specialists 400-1,000+ TL/hour.
