What Is FIRE?
Financial Independence, Retire Early
FIRE means reaching the point where passive income from your investments covers your living expenses. At this point, working becomes a choice, not a necessity.
The 4% Rule
Based on the Trinity Study, this rule states that you can withdraw 4% of your portfolio annually and your money will last 30+ years. FIRE Target = Annual Expenses × 25.
FIRE = Monthly Expenses × 12 × 25 The FIRE Journey
- Calculate your savings rate: (income - expenses) / income
- Determine your FIRE target by multiplying annual expenses by 25
- Direct your investments to low-cost index funds
- Gradually increase your savings rate
- When your portfolio reaches your FIRE target, you are financially independent
Info
Your FIRE target = Annual expenses × 25. For example, if you spend 20,000 TL monthly, your annual expense is 240,000 TL, and your FIRE target is 6,000,000 TL. Once you reach this amount, you can cover your expenses with a 4% annual withdrawal.
Savings rate is the most critical factor determining FIRE timeline. With a 10% savings rate, retirement takes about 50 years, with 50% about 17 years, with 70% about 8 years. Increasing savings rate both accelerates your wealth building and reduces your expense needs.
The original 4% rule was developed for the US market. In high-inflation environments, using the real rate of return is more accurate. In Turkey, a more conservative withdrawal rate (3-3.5%) or inflation-indexed investment instruments may be preferred.
